J/ psi Suppression in Pb-Pb Collisions: A Hint of Quark-Gluon Plasma Production?

چکیده

The NA50 Collaboration has recently observed a strong suppression of J/Ψ production in Pb–Pb collisions at 158 Gev/n. We show that this recent observation finds a quantitative explanation in a model which relates the suppression mechanism to the local energy density, whose value is higher in Pb–Pb collisions than in any other system studied previously. The sensitivity of the phenomenon to small changes in the energy density could be suggestive of quark-gluon plasma formation. Modeling Magnetic Field in Heavy ion Collisions Using Two Different Nuclear Charge Density Distributions

By studying the properties of matter during heavy-ion collisions, a better understanding of the Quark-Gluon plasma is possible. One of the main areas of this study is the calculation of the magnetic field, particularly how the values of conductivity affects this field and how the field strength changes with proper time. In matching the theoretical calculations with results obtained in lab, two diffe...

J/ψ Suppression as a Signal for the Quark-Gluon Plasma

We review the search for the quark-gluon plasma using the signal of the suppression of J/ψ production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Recent anomalous J/ψ suppression in high-energy Pb-Pb collisions observed by the NA50 Collaboration are examined and compared with earlier results from pA and nucleus-nucleus collisions with heavy ions of smaller mass numbers. The anomalous suppression of J/...

Signatures of Quark-Gluon Plasma Phase Transition in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions

In high-energy nuclear collisions, the new phase of the quark-gluon plasma is indicated by an anomalous increase in pressure, an excess of direct photon production, an excess of strangeness production, and an anomalous J/ψ suppression. We review these signatures and discuss how recent high-energy heavy-ion experiments at CERN are consistent with the production of the quark-gluon plasma in high-...

Quarkonium Production and Colour Deconfinement in Nuclear Collisions

The suppression of quarkonium production in nucleus-nucleus collisions was originally proposed as a signal of colour deconfinement. Strong “anomalous” J/ψ suppression in Pb-Pb collisions has been reported at this Conference by the NA50 Collaboration. Is this suppression really anomalous? Can we conclude that the quark-gluon plasma is already discovered? What has to be done next? I address these...

J/ψ Suppression in Pb+Pb Collisions: A New Look at Hadrons vs. Plasma

A reexamination of hadronic comover scattering indicates that this mechanism cannot explain the observed J/ψ suppression in Pb+Pb interactions. The possibility of quark-gluon plasma formation is then plausible. We present calculations in which the χc and ψ ′ are suppressed by the plasma while the J/ψ itself is not.
